Sunglasses to buy Today anyone can easily be confused by the wide variety of lens options and materials such as Trident, ACR, Competivision, Carbo-Glass and the list goes on and on ….

The conclusion is that there are basically 3 choices of lens material. Glass, plastic and laminates. Each with its own characteristics and benefits.

Glass – Glass lenses are still the most stable optical material for the construction of the lens. The glass lenses use has declined dramatically as the material of choice and because of its vulnerability to rupture when hit or fall. Many people also avoid now because of their weight.

Polycarbonate (better known as plastic) – Today 98% of regular sunglasses and prescription are usually made of polycarbonate, high-index, and CR-39, all names common commercial material of the plastic lens. With its ability to be easily molded into countless shapes, combined with its resistance to damage or scratches and light, Plastic lenses are here to stay!

Laminated laminated lenses – Although less common combinations of glass and plastic achieve specific performance or looks.

All lens materials above can be modified by the addition of chemicals or materials to provide protection or adding different performance characteristics. Here is a brief list of available lens add-ons or updates.
